Chilhowee Cabin
Chilhowee Cabin is located on a steeply sloping, densely wooded site on Chilhowee Mountain in Blount County, Tennessee.
The client’s goal was to downsize from their suburban house, reducing their carbon footprint, energy bills and maintenance responsibilities. The site also presented several opportunities for sustainable design, including the need for erosion control, tree preservation and rainwater infiltration.
The solution is a 392 square foot cabin that sits lightly upon the earth; despite its small size, the cabin provides comprehensive solutions to sustainable living through the thoughtful use of materials, systems and resources. It is designed to have the highest possible efficiency with the lowest impact on the environment.
Erosion control and tree preservation are eased by the small footprint, which prevents extensive site grading and disturbance. Roof rainwater collection and the use of pervious driveways and walking paths help maintain the site’s existing ability to absorb and utilize rainwater. A wood-burning stove is the primary heat source, utilizing a concrete block wall to store and spread the heat. Operable windows and ceiling fans, combined with the shade of mature trees preserved on site, are the primary sources of cooling.
By working with the existing conditions instead of against them, the natural beauty and stability of the site are allowed to remain intact.
