Williams Creek Neighborhood Energy & Environmental Education Center
Location: Knoxville, Tennessee
Client: Knox Housing Partnership
Completion: Ongoing
Elizabeth Eason Architecture is working with the East Tennessee Community Design Center to design a Neighborhood Center for Knox Housing Partnership near the seven LEED Gold homes they have recently completed. The site is a previously developed and much neglected site in the urban core of East Knoxville. Williams Creek meanders through the site on its way to the Tennessee River and animal tracks can be seen in the mud. The Environmental Center will be designed for a variety of uses including interior classrooms and flexible office space for heath, counseling, and finance advice use among others.
The full site will be used as an outdoor classroom for the neighborhood children to study the flora and fauna, identify invasive species, participate in creek clean ups, or learn to compost and garden. The building will be a hands-on learning area for energy efficiency and sustainable design. Knox Housing Partnership has achieved a LEED Gold rating for the nearby homes and they have set a goal of LEED Platinum for this project. This site will also serve as the beginning for a Williams Creek Greenway that will eventually connect the neighborhood to the Knoxville Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, the Tennessee River and other greenways.
