Mechanicsville Houses
Location: Knoxville, Tennessee
Client: Knoxville Habitat for Humanity
Completion: 2009
Elizabeth Eason Architecture collaborated with Knoxville Habitat for Humanity to design a set of plans for 3, 4, and 5 bedroom homes that could be easily adjusted to fit into a variety of neighborhoods and sites. To help Habitat build more energy efficient homes and streamline the construction process, the designs included repeating plan components, a compact envelope, and an efficient plumbing and mechanical layout. A range of design options was created for porches and columns adding variety to the standardized plans.
The houses in Mechanicsville were based on these standardized plans. The homes are detailed and finished with materials which meet the Mechanicsville historic guidelines. The houses were designed in the craftsman bungalow style and their site layout matches the density and setbacks of the existing neighborhood.
In the fall of 2009, these Mechanicsville homes received a Fantastic Fifteen award from Knox Heritage for “Excellence in Compatible New Construction.”
