Highlander Research and Education Center Dormitory
Designs are currently being developed for Highlander Research and Education Center’s new dormitory. Elizabeth Eason Architecture is leading the team of architects, landscape architects, engineers and energy modelers to design an economically feasible and environmentally responsible facility. Plans will include dorm rooms for visitors, an apartment for three interns, laundry facilities, small group meeting spaces and outdoor gathering places.
The design is intended to optimize energy performance by using a number of sustainable features, including wind, solar and geothermal power. Stormwater will be naturally managed and rainwater will be collected for use at the facility. Low emitting, recycled building materials will be used whenever possible. New landscaping will reduce the heat island effect at the facility while minimizing disturbance to the existing site.
The project is being registered with the US Green Building Council with the goal of achieving LEED certification.
