Highlander Research and Education Center Septima Clark Living Center

Designs are currently being developed for Highlander Research and Education Center’s new dormitory center in New Market Tennessee. The center will be named in honor of the "Queen Mother" of the American Civil Rights Movement and Highlander educator, Septima Poinsette Clark.

Elizabeth Eason Architecture is leading the team of architects, landscape architects, engineers and energy modelers to design an economically feasible and environmentally responsible facility. The new center will include dorm rooms for visitors, an apartment for three interns, laundry facilities, small group meeting spaces and outdoor gathering places.

The design is intended to optimize energy performance by using a number of sustainable features, including wind, solar and geothermal power. Stormwater will be naturally managed and rainwater will be collected for use at the facility. Low emitting, local, and recycled building materials will be used whenever possible. New landscaping will reduce the heat island effect at the facility while restoring native plants to the existing site. The project is registered with the US Green Building Council and is anticipating LEED Silver certification.
