Vestal Redevelopment

The City of Knoxville chose a team led by Elizabeth Eason Architecture to create a vision and implementation plan for the redevelopment of downtown Vestal, a community 3 miles south of Knoxville. The Vestal area, once home to the Vestal Lumber Company and Candora Marble Works, is steeped in a rich history that is in danger of being forgotten. One of the most important goals of the project is to give the Vestal community a better sense of identity by addressing and memorializing its history, its assets, and creating a defined downtown district.

One of Vestal’s unsung amenities is a creek which cuts across the northern portion of the site. Restoring the creek and extending the existing greenway system into a new public plaza will help integrate the natural portions of the site with the urban ones. The urban areas of the site will be enhanced by new development, the renovation of existing buildings, and street improvements, including the addition of sidewalks and street trees.

Sustainability is also a primary concern. We have worked to address issues of pedestrian connectivity, stormwater management, heat island effect, light pollution, reduced dependence on automobiles, and restoring environmentally damaged areas.
