New Residence in Fourth & Gill
The Neff home is a new two-story residence built in the Historic Fourth and Gill Neighborhood of Knoxville, Tennessee. This contemporary victorian home blends with the character of the neighborhood and meets historic design guidelines; the detached garage is placed at the rear of the lot, a large front porch, second floor porch and bay add additional scale that is typical of neighboring homes, and the front of the home is the same distance from the sidewalk as other homes on the street.
The Neff home is light and airy with 10’ ceilings, large windows, and transoms over the doors to let in daylight and breezes. The first floor features a study with built-in bookshelves, recessed lighting for artwork and double doors that lead to a private patio. The second floor has a large covered porch with a tiled floor overlooking the front yard and Gratz Street.
The 2,100 square foot home incorporates many sustainable and small house design features. It is meant to be compact, yet feel spacious. The home’s three porches, for example, create additional outdoor rooms. Materials were selected for their durability, sustainability, and energy efficiency: bamboo floors, highly insulated walls and roof, double hung wood windows, high efficiency HVAC and a tankless water heater were all used in the home. The interior features low VOC paints and formaldehyde-free insulation for a healthy indoor environment.
