Shelton Grp – LEED Sliver
Located in Knoxville’s historic Old City, the Shelton Grp project is an office build-out in a historic warehouse. Shelton Grp is the nation’s leading marketing communications firm focused exclusively on energy and the environment. When they approached Elizabeth Eason Architecture to design their new office, the focus on energy and the environment was at the forefront.
Our first goal was to reflect the Shelton Grp’s expertise and embrace of sustainability by making it visibly obvious when clients visited their office. Shelton Grp’s business cards served as inspiration. Already an advocate of reuse and recycling, their business cards are printed on post-industrial recycled cereal boxes.
This inspired our theme of reuse and led to the design of space-defining walls of reused cardboard tubes, walls clad in locally salvaged pallet boards, countertops with recycled glass and light fixtures made from salvaged dinner spoons. Large wooden tables, near the open entry, serve as a gathering space for employees and guests. Years ago, the tabletops served as cutting tables at Knoxville’s Palm Beach Sewing Company. We found them at Knox Heritage’s Salvage Room and had them refinished with bees wax and linseed oil for the project.
The layout of the office space is designed to be very flexible with a variety of work spaces shared by several departments. The new space has a mix of private offices, shared quiet rooms, but still maintains an open collaborative atmosphere with grouped workspaces, lounge areas and small and large group meeting rooms.
There are also the not-so-obvious sustainable details. Throughout the space, low VOC paint was used as well as recycled content carpeting. The Shelton Grp office space achieved LEED Silver certification.
